Fall Cleaning Checklist for Westlake, OH Homes

Lake-effect season is coming. Here is the room-by-room checklist we use to get Westlake homes ready before the first snow and the holiday guests.

Why fall matters more in Westlake

Westlake sits just south of Lake Erie, which means our falls are short and our winters arrive with lake-effect snow, road salt, and months of closed windows. Whatever dust, pollen, and grime is in the house in October is usually still there in March. A thorough fall reset — before the furnace runs full-time and before Thanksgiving guests arrive — makes the whole winter easier.

The list below is the same one our teams use when a Westlake homeowner books a seasonal deep cleaning. You can tackle it yourself over a few weekends, or hand the heavy parts to us.

Entryways, mudrooms, and garages

Leaf season along Detroit Road and the wooded streets near Clague Park tracks an incredible amount of debris indoors. Shake out or replace entry mats, wipe down the mudroom bench and cubbies, and mop the floor with a cleaner safe for your tile or vinyl. Put a boot tray down now — it is much easier than scrubbing salt residue off hardwood in January.

In the garage entry, sweep the step and doorway so grit is not carried straight into the kitchen.

Windows, sills, and window treatments

Before you close up the house, vacuum window tracks, wipe sills, and wash the interior glass. Take down or vacuum curtains and dust blinds slat by slat. Summer pollen and lake humidity leave a film that you will stare at all winter if it stays.

Kitchen: get ready for holiday cooking

Degrease the range hood and filter, clean inside the oven and microwave, wipe cabinet fronts, and clear out the fridge before the Thanksgiving grocery run. Wipe the tops of cabinets and the fridge — a spot almost everyone forgets and where kitchen grease collects dust.

Furnace dust and baseboards

The first weeks of heating season push a summer's worth of dust out of the vents. Vacuum registers and returns, dust ceiling fans (then reverse them to push warm air down), and wipe baseboards throughout. Change your furnace filter at the same time.

Bathrooms and bedrooms

Descale showerheads and glass, scrub grout, and wash bath mats. In bedrooms, flip or rotate mattresses, wash duvets and pillows, and swap summer bedding for flannel. Vacuum under beds — it is where winter dust bunnies start.

Keep it clean through winter

The easiest way to hold onto a fall reset is a regular maintenance visit. Many Westlake families move to biweekly recurring cleaning from November through March, when salt and slush are at their worst. We also serve nearby neighborhoods, including Rocky River and North Olmsted. See all of our house cleaning services for more options.
